Bring back the Bayou and Save the Lower 9!
The lower 9th Ward was severely damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A large reason for the devestation was not just a levee, and governmental failure. The failure to protect vital coastal wetland ecosystems resulted in increased storm surge and wind damage. The Bayou Bienvenue Wetland Triangle is the northern boarder of the Lower 9th Ward, and was once a thriving cypress wetland. Now it has been reduced to a pool of brackish water.Bayou Bienvenue is currently ranked fourth in the Coastal Wetland Planning, Protection and Restoration Act, and we hope that through petitioning in the Lower 9th ward and in the larger community (you), that we can raise our ranking and secure $30 million for a sediment diversion!! This is a huge part of the protection that is necessary to Sustain the 9, and we need your voices and signatures!
